What Makes Woven Shades Different

Woven shades are crafted from natural materials. Artisans weave bamboo, reeds, grasses, and woods into panels that let light through, creating a soft, filtered glow wherever they’re installed. Available in Roman-style or woven roller shades, you can add liners for more privacy and light control, or leave the shades unlined to achieve the full light-filtering effect that makes these shades distinctive.

Color shifts, texture differences, and the irregular patterns you get from organic fibers mean no two shades match perfectly, which is the exact charm that makes woven wood shades so special.

Hunter Douglas Provenance® Woven Wood Shades

Provenance® Woven Wood Shades are known for their hand-woven natural materials available in three different styles. Roman shades fold into soft stacks when raised, which is the classic look most people picture. Woven roller shades in the Waterfall Roman style mount flush without a front valance for cleaner lines that suit modern homes. These custom woven shades work with PowerView® Automation for voice control or scheduled operation. UltraGlide® and LiteRise® give you smooth manual control, and cordless options eliminate dangling cords that pose safety concerns for kids and pets.

Alta Natural Woven Shades

Alta offers woven shades in three collections that look and feel distinct:

  • Woven Woods use hand-split bamboo, natural wood, reeds, and jute. The materials are bold and earthy, showing off the raw character of each fiber type. You’ll see nature’s variations clearly in these shades.
  • Grass Weaves mix natural materials like papyrus and cotton with a small amount of polyester. The blend gives you more consistent patterns between panels while keeping organic texture.
  • Select Weaves are carefully hand-loomed from selected sea grass, bamboo species, and fine jute. The tight weave creates a texture that feels almost like fabric, with the visual interest of natural materials woven by hand.

Alta offers Traditional Roman styling with front valances and soft folds, or Waterfall styling for a sleeker appearance. Woven roller shades are also available for a streamlined, modern look. For smooth operation, consider a continuous-loop cord, cordless lift, or motorization via BLISS™ or Somfy® systems.

Adding Liners to Woven Shades

Natural woven wood shades look beautiful, but they don’t offer much privacy. When your interior lights are on at night, people outside can see silhouettes through the weave. Street-facing windows might need daytime privacy, too.

The solution? Liners. Fixed liners attach to the back of the shade and move in tandem with it. You can choose between light-filtering for privacy that still lets natural light in, room-darkening for bedrooms, or blackout for robust light blocking.

Independent liners operate separately from the shade itself. You get four different positions: both up for maximum light, both down for full privacy, shade down with liner up for filtered light, or liner down with shade up so you keep privacy but still see the woven texture from inside.

Why Woven Shades Work for Coastal Homes

Woven window shades blend seamlessly into most Lowcountry architecture. Because coastal design already leans into organic elements and neutral colors, woven shades are an effortless fit. Their light-filtering effect also softens the intense South Carolina summer sun without completely blocking it out, so you can enjoy natural light while reducing glare and UV exposure.

And if you’re environmentally-conscious, you can feel good about choosing a window treatment that’s made from natural materials — responsibly sourced reeds, grasses, and woods create lower-impact window treatments than synthetic alternatives.
